Declaration: Call for Protection of Children Suffering Autism from Radiofrequency Radiation Exposure

We are scientists engaged in the study of environmental factors that influence autism. We have serious concerns regarding Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 Guideline.

In 2007 a study brought attention to the effect of electromagnetic fields- radiofrequency radiation (EMF-RFR) in children suffering from autism and their incapacity to eliminate heavy metals. Since then, our environment has become more polluted than ever by wireless technology and Health Canada has done nothing to either take into consideration the non thermal effects of EMF or to educate the public on its safe use.

The 2012 BioInitiative report includes a whole chapter on the effects of EMF in autism. Over 400 studies were revised. Although the exact mechanism whereby a normal child’s development changes into one of autistic behavior is still unknown, studies must concentrate in the factors that may influence such change and also may maintain it.

A child, during all developmental stages is influenced by EMFs and particularly radiofrequency radiation. They are the most fragile population and must be protected from all EMF-RFR. Such is not the case because guidelines do not consider non thermal effects.

In 1990 the autism ration was 1:10 000, today the prevalence is of 1:68, affecting five times more boys than girls. Health Canada is failing its duty to protect children so that the epidemic stops.

EMF-RFR has to be used with precaution and not as a toy; it also has a positive use that should be looked into, but having guidelines 1000 times above the non thermal effect is irresponsible.

We also urgently call upon Health Canada to:

1. To intervene in what we view as an emerging health crisis;
2. To establish guidelines based on the best available scientific data including cognitive and developmental disorders, developmental effects, learning and behavioral problems among children and youth, cancer and DNA damage and stress response, and the broad range of symptoms classified as EHS; and
3. To advice Canadians to limit their exposure, particularly children and educate them to use it responsibly.

“My long-standing personal concern about the health of exposed children to EMF was greatly enhanced by a 2011 Scientific Paper by Buchner and Eger where they described a significant increase in the levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline following exposure and a concomitant substantial decrease in the level of dopamine.
There should be little doubt in anyone’s mind that long-term dysregulation of the catecholamine system will sooner or later damage a child’s health and well-being.” (Attached)
